New Delhi: HCMCT Manipal Hospitals heart transplant team in Delhi has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing a life-saving heart transplant on a 54-year-old woman from Haryana suffering from end-stage heart failure.
The patient had been battling severe cardiac dysfunction for several years, despite receiving optimal medical management and advanced cardiac interventions.

The patient was admitted in an extremely critical condition, with an ejection fraction of just 15%, frequent hospital admissions, severe breathlessness, fatigue, and generalized body swelling.
Her condition had deteriorated to the point where she was unable to walk or lie down comfortably. Doctors placed her on intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support for ten days, a temporary measure to assist heart function.

Even after cardiac resynchronisation therapy with defibrillator (CRT-D), an advanced pacemaker therapy, her condition failed to improve, making heart transplantation the only life-saving option.
After a highly anxious wait of nearly a month, a compatible donor heart from a brain-dead patient at a private hospital in Gurugram became available.
The transplant was led by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Yugal Kishore Mishra, Chairman – Manipal Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon, Delhi, along with his expert multidisciplinary team.
A meticulously coordinated green corridor ensured the donor heart reached HCMCT Manipal Hospitals within the critical time window. The complex surgical procedure was completed in 3 hours and 20 minutes, and the transplanted heart began functioning effectively soon after surgery.
Dr. Yugal Kishore Mishra stated that the successful HCMCT Manipal Hospitals heart transplant reflects years of dedicated efforts in building a comprehensive and self-reliant heart failure and transplant programme.

He noted that timely medical and surgical decision-making across all stages of heart failure plays a crucial role in improving outcomes. The patient has shown remarkable recovery, with strong signs of improvement within just 15 days of the transplant.
This successful procedure further strengthens HCMCT Manipal Hospitals’ position as one of India’s leading centres for advanced heart failure management and transplant care.
As a centre of excellence in cardiac sciences, the hospital offers a full range of advanced heart failure treatments, including minimally invasive valve surgery, CRT-D implantation, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and heart transplantation, ensuring comprehensive and timely care for patients with complex cardiac conditions.
